Since it’s opening, Chihuly Garden and Glass has gained wide recognition as a major destination and signature place both within our region and worldwide. Richard Hartlage, as landscape designer, led the highly collaborative design process, working closely with Dale Chihuly, Owen Richards Architecture, Seattle Center, the Seattle Design Commission, the Space Needle, and a wide range of stakeholders to create a compelling design vision and comprehensive plan for redevelopment. The project includes nearly two acres of site redevelopment, 30,000sf of renovated and new mixed-use arts, events, restaurant and retail space, and a dramatic multi-use glasshouse exhibit and events space. Extensive enhancements to the surrounding Seattle Center campus include a dramatic new South campus entry and a sequence of meditative public pathways with intimate spaces for respite and contemplation. The unsightly “arcade pavilion” was sustainably transformed with extensive green roofs and green wall elements, creating a revitalized backdrop for the historic Horiuchi Amphitheatre.
