During 4th year in architecture school we wer given the task of designing a tourist facilities complex next to a small fishing bay in Laurion, Greece. Not wantin to design just another typical greek tourist resort, we instead concentrated in how our design could benefit the local community. After initial research we concluded in designing a system of residences and distribute them among local small fishermen' families. Concept being that during summer time they could hospitate seasonal tourists, teach them traditional fishing and boat making  and thus make an extra income.

First step was to design two types of residence modules emphasizing in plain lines, shapes and materials trying to mix traditional local and aegean isles’ architecture. Each module is itself an easily divided entity with rooms and even whole sections being able isolate and be inhabited indipentably just by  closing a door or two. For that reason it was important for individual entarnce points to be available for all levels. Sunlight was also an important element of design defining orientation and shading systems installation. Solar panels were also incorporated facing straight south to generate as much energy as possible, whilst housing residence facilities and providing a modern aesthetic note on the whole complex.

Modules and other facilities were then placed  in a fishbone pattern aligned with the sun and providing views towards the sea, taking advantage of the given plot’s natural elevation. That system was also chosen as it can, by  repetition, provide for an expansion of the proposed complex. To provide shading a system of pergolae was proposed connecting all of the   different entities and also providing a sence of unity.

Although our main strategy was to invest in long seasonal tourism we also wanted to attract weekend visitors and people on day excursions. In that spirit a swimming pool, reustarant and a all day caffe were added to the   programme. We also designed some small 30m2  individual appartments able to  hospitate one to four people each for a short duration of time. Our plan also included small shops where local community could earn an extra income by dealing fresh caught fish, souvenirs etc.
