Rockaway Biking Community Center

Portfolio Link

This project is a community center that specializes in producing bicycles, and its purpose is to serve the bicycle in all stages, from manufacturing to repairing, selling, or renting them out to the community. We viewed the site as a nexus point across the Rockaways at large, connecting existing bike paths through the
site, allowing tourists to come in, rent a bike for the day, and go on a bike tour on the boardwalk.

The program is an organization of discs connected by helix ramps along the perimeter, grouping structure and program towards the middle of the discs so that the edges may be reserved for movement. This circulation lends itself to meandering paths, encouraging movement and exploration throughout the program.

The project is elevated and suspended by cables extending from central cores from above the structure in a form of cantilevers. Columns come down and connect floor slabs together, suspending the outer edges of each slab. This system leaves the landscape open for recreational use, with the main attraction being a bike park.
With multiple ramp entrances, it would also be easily accessible during a state of emergency, as flooding is common in the Rockaways, and will only continue to worsen as sea level rises.
