Pollination Station

Portfolio Link

This project situates itself in unoccupied floors of the Graybar Building in New York City. With Midtown Manhattan woefully lacking in garden space, this project fills that void by providing a pollinator garden to bees, butterflies, birds, and more. Because of its location overtop the Graybar Passage that links directly
to Grand Central Station, this building also sees occupants from all over the city. This leads to office workers essentially “pollinating” the building itself; therefore, this gardenscape will serve three types of occupants: pollinators, people, and plants.

The undulating design took inspiration from the curving archways of Grand Central Station below. By exposing the curvatures in an intervention visible from the street, Pollination Station embodies the spirit of movement and travel. The plants chosen for the gardens have been carefully selected and curated to suit pollinator
gardens throughout all seasons, providing a different textural and visual experience at different times of the year. Different sides of the facade allow for differing amounts of sunlight, which affects which plants can be situated there, and, in turn, the color palette and appearance of the exterior versus edge condition
versus interior of the intervention.
