As a project exploring adaptive reuse, I found many opportunities in salvaging architecture found in the Sugar Hill Arts District of Detroit, Michigan. I developed a program that invited artists to a facility for temporary residence and simultaneous access to state-of-the-art studio facilities. A gallery and shop allows their work to be sold as it is produced. A central core illuminates the interior of the building circulation as experienced by the visitor, distributes the new mechanical systems, houses vertical circulation, and structurally supports a building-long ramp that circulates along and visually exposes artist workspaces. The visitor is able to see the artist create, explore, and innovate.
