Sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, temperature, pain, balance, and awareness all affect one’s relationship to architecture. But what happens when one of these senses are lost? The intent of my masters project is to discover the balance of sensory loss through architecture with studies of the Deaf Community. This specific community not only has its own culture and way of life but also a dire need for accessibility and gratification within architecture.
To interact with the site as well as my previous research and concept of a sensory interaction that supports the loss of hearing and the culture of the Deaf Community, I came up a sequence of three entities called The Rochester Deaf Milieu. The three main components are The Thermal Spa, a Pedestrian Bridge, and The Poetry Center.
