This project was a team project. The program was to design an Embassy within the City of New York.
The Fijian Embassy acts as a key link of culture between the Republic of Fiji and western culture. The main driving force in this link is through the use of sight and motion, both to and from the building. In Fijian bures each has cracks and specific instances with vision to the outside. In this embassy building, each tilt and angle in floor plan and section relate directly to the purpose of the room. They are specifically tailored to sun exposure, vision, and sun glare.
The Fijian Embassy acts as a great example of steel construction both in unique and ordinary ways. The design was to allow for a low-cost design that is quick to build up. A standard open web truss was used throughout the building. One example of unique structure includes scissor trusses that are standing on their side to create an undulating facade along New York City's highline. The wall assembly itself is made of steel 'sips.' Using these accounts for thermal loads that the building might have to go through and also gives a modular size to the building, which allows for simple installation.
