Nestled mid-block on a quaint hillside in Cole Valley is this single family tract house built in 1939 in the wildly popular Mediterranean Revival style, complete with an interior courtyard whose light provides anchor to the living spaces surrounding it. Perfectly suitable for habitation but lacking in style and modern conveniences, a series of small interventions was strategically planned to expand and update the home over time while the family continued to occupy the space. This slow growth necessitated a material strategy that was both adaptable and responsive to the existing house, merging old and new together at each step of the process that is at once contemporary and fun.
