The challenge of this project was to design a contemporary, sleek yet traditionally rooted facade scheme for a cricket stadium, where the structural parameters were already set. This called for an in depth study of different possible facade schemes in combination with various materials.
The design also had to take clues from local architecture, craft, and culture. Finally, the entire structure would have to be a lightweight construction at a moderate budget.
The design process explored various design options, in terms of form, material and cost.
The final design, a result of the process, showcases a very minimalist yet visually strong facade. Clues from local materials, color, and culture were interpreted in a modern expression. The design proposes use of terra-cotta/reinforced concrete earth colored fins, which repeats along the facade to create an uniform expression, which unifies the different and apparently scattered elements of the stadium and creates a strong identity. On a further level, same fins with darker color are used to depict local sports as a graphic which adds flavor to the design.
