The spiritual retreat brief required the students to use the Durban Mangrove Estuary as a site for a structure that would allow a person/ persons of any spiritual inclination a place to relax, reflect and meditate. My design incorporated a merge of structure and nature in contrasting forms that intrigues and envelopes the user. The dramatic form of the structure is softened by the lush greenery. The play on repetitive elements and strategically places openings allows interesting phenomenological aspects in the design which in turn results in a suitable space for reflection.
The multi-use project required the students to turn an existing building located in one of the busier and culturally rich areas of Durban into a place for retail, commercial and residential use. The design incorporates colourful elements which reflect the life of the surrounding areas. The design is kept clean and stylish while incorporating elements found in the regional architecture of the area such as exposed brickwork and the original structure's jagged roof.
