New Hospital in Italy

As the final 6 week project in the Healthcare Studio of my sixth year of school, we were assigned a new 40-bed hospital to be set in the country of our choice, which was our semester focus.  I chose Italy based on personal bias after touring during my study abroad.

I chose Palermo largely because of its Mediterranean climate and beautiful scenery.  The actual site I picked was on a hill overlooking a beautiful bay, which became inspiration for the design.  The hospital can be seen from the "bay-side" as 2 arms reaching out towards the ocean, and much of the patient experience happens on this side of the building, mainly inpatient hospital rooms.  The intention was to give the patient something beautiful to focus on as part of their healing process.  For those rooms which happened on the opposite side, extensive multilevel roof gardens were developed which could be accessed from each patient floor.
