Johnston Marklee is currently seeking an Architect & Project Manager for the Los Angeles office, with a minimum of seven years of experience. The firm is entering a new period of expansion, embarking on signature projects with global reach and cultural profile, and seeks experienced candidates to grow with our office. Successful candidates will have experience in the management of complex projects, client teams, consultants, and internal project teams. Responsibilities will include the preparation of construction documents, in-house quality assurance, and construction administration. Experience should include design, detailing, specifications, coordination of CD’s and agency approvals, shop drawings, mock-up review, and on-site observation of custom architectural buildings and interiors.

Johnston Marklee was founded by partners Sharon Johnston, FAIA and Mark Lee in 1998. Projects undertaken by JML are diverse in scale and type, situated throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Recent projects include the new UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios campus in Culver City, California, the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, Texas, a renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the design of the Dropbox global headquarters in San Francisco. Johnston Marklee’s collaborative process investigates issues of design, function, and technical performance to create holistic works of architecture. Mark and Sharon are both Professors in Practice at Harvard Graduate School of Design and the culture of research-based design defines the practice of Johnston Marklee.

Required Skills: 
We are looking for an exceptional candidate with a Master of Architecture degree (M-Arch) or five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree (B-Arch) and a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in an architecture firm. As this position is for management of a mid-scale cultural project, the selected candidate must have demonstrated experience in Design Development, Construction Documentation and Construction Administration phases of projects, with understanding of codes and industry standards, and minimal need for procedural supervision.  Alongside strong design and problem-solving skills, the candidate must demonstrate a successful history of coordinating consultant work, including review of consultant proposals, fees, and negotiated contracts, including the validation of completion of project milestones. Candidates with professional licensure are preferred, however those that are in the process of obtaining licensure or with equivalent professional experience are encouraged to apply.  

The candidate should demonstrate an ability to manage project budgets and schedules for $10-50 M projects for commercial and institutional clients with excellent internal and external communication skills to implement high-design and finish concepts within given project parameters. The selected candidate will have a strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Rhino, Vray, Revit, and Adobe Creative-Suite, and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments with strong organizational skills. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required.
