Established in 2019, SPEEDBOAT is an emerging Los Angeles–based design studio delivering residential, commercial, and cultural projects. Our work is informed by climate, context, materiality, and history. SPEEDBOAT believes in precise geometries, structural finesse, contemporary finishes, and a collective, humanist spirit. We collaborate with our local community of designers, builders, and artists to create uncommon value for owners, investors, institutions, and brands.

This position is a client-facing role, full or part-time, depending on your needs: we are interested in culture fit and happy to customize the position for the right person. The Designer will work with the Project Principal and Design Principal on multiple residential and commercial projects currently underway. This position requires you to be collaborative, creative, and able to keep pace in a busy, growing studio. Our team values conceptual thinking, efficient work habits, good communication, and a healthy work-life balance. This designer will research and develop designs and produce solutions to be presented for consideration to the entire studio, keeping true to the studio vision, ethos, mood, aesthetic, & brand identity, inclusive of, but not limited by, the following conceptual frameworks: ‘a non-binary practice’, ‘organized chaos’, ‘god is in the details.’ We believe that face-to-face collaboration, kindness, transparency, and human interaction are core attributes of a good design practice and a healthy work culture. we embrace hybrid work, but we need someone who understands and will take advantage of the creative spontaneity of collaboration in a studio environment.


  • Work with us to create new projects and develop relationships with new clients, with the broader aim of extending a new service line and growing a market sector.

  • Help our young studio cultivate studio guidelines, workflows, and roles. 

  • Meet weekly with the Project Principal to review tasks, changes in projects, and other information pertinent to project performance and success.

  • Attend to, contribute to, and work across all the projects in the studio, which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Collect materials and define a conceptual framework for project design at the outset of a project, with written and visual narratives communicated to the entire design team. 

    • Create presentations and renderings using Photoshop & Indesign.

    • Produce architectural drawings and documentation using  Rhino 7.

    • Model efficiently for renderings and presentation graphics, in Rhino 7.

    • Use cloud-based collaboration and communication software like: Google Chrome, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Bluebeam, Adobe CC.

    • Redline concept drawings and construction details in Bluebeam.

    • Reference technical manuals to ensure compliance with required codes and standards.

    • Manage fabricator bidding and FF&E vendor communication.

    • Participate in on-site management and construction observation, as guided by the Project Principal.

    • Lead portfolio documentation of completed projects, including coordination with photographers writing narratives and fine-tuning graphics and drawings.

  • Keep clear and accessible records of critical project information: meeting notes, event logs, etc.

  • Communicate potential problems to the Project Principal and alert when deadlines or milestones might not be met ahead of time.

  • Understand the balance of a creative studio ecosystem, care for Speedboat people, and carry an enthusiasm to create  thoughtful and  innovative built work.


  • Be intimately familiar with the market for residential and commercial design in Los Angeles.

  • Strong interest in development and growth in responsibility.

  • Be full of new ideas, eager to try new things, are adaptable and flexible, and like to take initiative. 

  • Three to seven years of professional experience demonstrating proficiency with the tasks involved in providing architectural services from pre-design through construction drawings. Familiarity with curating architectural palettes, materials,fixtures and design options.Proficient in Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam, and related software used to create design and contract documents.

  • Comfortable working collaboratively with  new and existing clients.

  • Masters degree in Architecture.

  • US Resident.
