MICHAEL K. CHEN ARCHITECTURE (MKCA) is a growing New York-based architecture firm dedicated to producing innovative and thoughtful built work and applied research. The office’s portfolio encompasses a wide range of scales, from the design of furniture, to interiors, to buildings, all of which is deeply informed by a commitment to craft at the highest level, a playful sensibility, and a love of tinkering, of drawing, and of making. Established in 2012, MKCA has been recognized with numerous international awards and press, and is sought after by a diverse clientele.

Current projects include high-end houses and apartments, community oriented projects in healthcare and social services, multi-unit residential buildings, commercial interiors, libraries and other small institutional projects, exhibitions, research, and writing. Our projects frequently straddle the disciplines of architecture, interior design, and industrial design, often in collaboration with artists and other designers, scientists, and engineers. We work as a tightly knit team operating from a studio environment in Manhattan, and all team members participate in the full spectrum of our services and activities.

In March of 2020, MKCA co-founded Design Advocates, a network of over 80 small firms and individuals collaborating on pro-bono projects, research, and advocacy to serve the public good and help disadvantaged communities and nonprofits adapt their spaces for the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. D/A is working on 35+ projects that serve public schools, libraries, the homeless, immigrant populations, the recently incarcerated, local restaurants, and others, and is committed to putting design excellence into service toward equality and the common good.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking talented junior level architects to join our team. Junior designers and architects work with more senior project managers and the firm principal to develop projects from concept to realization, generating design studies and production documents, and the representation of projects for presentation and communication. Staff designers engage the entire range of the office’s creative workflow through sketching, parametric design, digital modeling, rendering, drafting, physical model making, and prototyping.

The ideal candidate is one with strong design skills and an aesthetic and intellectual  point of view that are complementary to the practice, and someone who is curious, detail-oriented, hardworking, and eager to get their hands a little dirty. The position offers numerous opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the work of the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in Architecture, M.Arch preferred.

  • Strong digital design skills. Fluency with Rhino, Grasshopper, V-Ray, and Maxwell are a must.

  • Strong drawing and graphic skills including in AutoCAD and the Adobe Suite. Revit experience is a plus.

  • A demonstrated commitment to making, whether through analog or digital means, including CNC milling, Robotics, 3D printing, or others.

  • 1-2 years of professional architecture experience is highly desirable

This is a full-time position with competitive compensation commensurate with a candidate’s experience and qualifications. MKCA offers a complete suite of employee benefits, including paid time off; health, dental, and vision coverage; 401(K) with employer match. MKCA is a Queer POC-owned business and committed to an inclusive and equality minded workplace and diversity. We do however, have an affinity for nerds. And some of our team are dogs.

COVID-19 POLICIES

Though we love our studio space in Manhattan, we are currently working remotely through the end of 2020. The studio will provide software and a computer (Mac) as necessary to equip work-from-home situations. It is greatly preferred that candidates reside or plan to relocate to the New York City area as this position will involve some physical model building and situations requiring physical presence (with masks and social distance).

TO APPLY

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter with salary requirements, current CV, and portfolio to jobs@mkca.com. Please limit attachments to 25mb. We are unfortunately not able to consider candidates without authorization to work in the United States.
