ALTERATIONS and EXTENSION to DOMESTIC DWELLING at 4 HILLVIEW, EDINBURGH EH4 2AB

Our Client’s home incorporated an existing kitchen extension to the rear which significantly overshadowed and split the rear patio. As part of the brief to create a more family friendly open-plan interior linking through to the garden, this extension was demolished and the new extension built adjacent to the eastern boundary of the garden. This enabled us to create a large patio benefitting from late afternoon and evening light which utilised additional space from the side passageway.

The extension was built in to the garden to take advantage of a change in level to create a window whose cill was level with the garden when viewed from the inside. The traditional rectangular shape of extension was deformed by stretching a corner to cover both openings to the existing interior rooms, resulting in an almost pyramidal shaped roof with bespoke cupola over the apex.

Structure and cladding was in ‘green’ oak with steel cladding covering the roof. Several client led amendments mid-way through the project led to a revised roof design using green oak as a roof structure which required the combined skills of Contractor, Engineer and Architect and Technologist to resolve and construct. The resulting amendments greatly enhance the overall appearance.
