The manufacture of stringed instruments utilize CNC machines these days. Automation in Piano and guitar manufacturing are well established and widely understood. But there are other stringed instruments that invite further study. Such is the motivation to re-examine the familiar in new ways. For example, much study in the more recent past has focused on the physics of sound production of the violin, from the Chladni plates in the last century to the Eigenmode studies of today; the varnish making methods going back into antiquity; and, of course, the spectrographic results and the use of the latest electron microscopes to examine the extremely hard-to-acquire small wood and protective coating samples from concert quality multi-million dollar instruments of famous master makers of the past..
