Metropolitan Hybrids: Food Desert to Oasis

Infrastructure is the underlying framework that supports the operations and growth of a city. This can be considered as roads, railways, bridges, energy supplies, and so on. As new infrastructure is developed, old structures tend to become obsolete and create disruptions within the urban fabric. This project focused on adapting such outdated infrastructure in the city of Boston, while evaluating new ideas for frameworks of what the future city should be. The site chosen is the Charlesgate Bridge overpass, using the structure to define a new urban space. The goal is to stitch two sections of the city together while reusing the concrete structure as an alternative infrastructure. For this project, I first looked globally at how food deserts are an increasing issue for not only rural regions, but for urban areas, as well. The Charlesgate Bridge is located right in the middle of a food desert in the city of Boston. With no easy way to obtain fresh, affordable food,  the infrastructure will become a fresh food public market for the Back Bay and Kenmore neighborhoods.
