International Concrete Masonry Unit Association

Forty four years ago, the Indiana Concrete Masonry Association approached the College of Architecture and Planning with the idea of supporting a student competition. The college faculty members were elated to have the opportunity to work with members of the building industry and accepted their offer and the rest is history. The ICMA membership provides financial support for the competition of which 100% is awarded to the students as prize money. The expectation of the faculty and the ICMA is that students will familiarize themselves with precedents that use modular concrete masonry units in both conventional and unconventional ways. While your understanding of the subtleties of concrete masonry may be somewhat limited as second year students, the fundamental ideas of masonry as effective bearing walls, thermal masses, sound barriers, as well as infill and paving is sufficient to allow you to integrate these ideas from the beginning of your design thinking. Your task is to design a mixed-used project in the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The project includes the following general uses: (1) new student housing for the University of Saint Francis, (2) apartments for lease, (3) local retail for the downtown area, and (4) garage parking.
