'Mediation' in the courtyard of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris

Studio Boloz installations form part of the unique 'Mediation' in the courtyard of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris!

Studio Boloz, founded by Izabela Bołoz and renowned for its unique fusion of art, architecture, and design, has been selected to create a distinctive outdoor exhibition design in the courtyard of the famed Parisian hospital, Hôtel-Dieu. Commissioned by the creative agency Manifesto and in collaboration with the Parisian set designer Cyril Delhomme and the graphic design studio Maison Solide, Studio Boloz has designed an exhibition that showcases the continuous transformation of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris, a process that has been an integral part of the history of this place for over a century.

A Place - Forever Alive.

Hôtel-Dieu, the first and indeed the oldest hospital located in the heart of Paris, on Île de la Cité, one of the two natural islands on the Seine, and in the immediate vicinity of the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, is today a significant place for the residents of the French capital. For centuries, this architectural landmark has withstood not only the changing cityscape but also its dynamically shifting role in healthcare. Despite numerous metamorphoses - expansions, reconstructions, damages from fires, and the passage of time – it remains, to this day, a haven for those seeking help and support in their most challenging moments. Over time, Hôtel-Dieu has also adapted to the needs of a changing society and scientific advancements. Today, while maintaining its medical functions, the hospital is also a vital hub for medical research and a home for innovative start-ups.

A Story that Endures - An Invitation to Mediation.

The history and location of the place served as the inspiration for the Exhibition – Mediation, a kind of invitation to engage with the space, history, and function of Hôtel-Dieu. In line with Cyril Delhomme's vision, Studio Boloz crafted modern, colourful, modular elements that contrast with the building's monumental architecture, drawing the attention of passers-by.

The geometric, contrasting modules, which can be interpreted as seating elements, contemplation points, or high tables, aim to highlight the uniqueness of the place, stimulate the curiosity of visitors, and invite them to spontaneous interaction. Each element incorporates information boards detailing the rich history of this exceptional place.

Spatial and Cultural Mediation

The evolution story of Hôtel-Dieu begins right at the entrance hall, where visitors are greeted by a series of symbolic illustrations bridging the past, present, and future of this exceptional venue. What is more, the colourful graphics echo the stained glass of the nearby Notre-Dame cathedral, harmoniously intertwining these two iconic Parisian landmarks into a deeply cohesive experience.

The installation in the courtyard of Hôtel-Dieu is dedicated to all users of this place: staff, patients, caregivers, and start-ups from the innovation and health sector. The inauguration of the exhibition took place on September 16th during the European Heritage Days. The exhibition will be on display for 2 years.
