Center for Integrated Brain Health & Wellness, VA Martinez, California

12,600 square feet, $6.7 million

The Center for Integrated Brain Health & Wellness was shaped by the needs of the Veterans.  These needs were conveyed by the US Department of Veterans Affairs' physicians, psychologists, and therapists who directed Hilliard Architects. For example,  Dr. James Muir studied VA rehabilitation centers, interviewing their staff to find out what works.  One important criteria was to have a youthful looking facility. He said "If the building doesn't look inviting to veterans in their twenties, they simply won't use it". The building was shaped by the VA caregivers who reviewed every single room's size, shape and adjacency. Hilliard Architects role was to listen and translate these needs into a completed building.
