Macau is an intriguing manifestation of the melding of the East and the West. As a Portuguese administered outpost in China for over 440 years, it has accumulated layer upon layers of historically rich cultural interchange, becoming a gateway into the Far East for European merchants and traders. As Portuguese rule led to the development of picturesque, maze-like streets and alleys, vibrant piazzas, and breathtaking architecture in Macau, it also molded a delicate identity and lifestyle unique only to its residents. However, evolving values of urban heritage and shifting priorities following a change in administration led to an unprecedented social and urban transformation.
The new-age urban planning museum shall be a timeless bridge that harmonizes the multiple identities of the city of Macau. It should provide a quality environment for educating, exhibiting, and appreciating the development of Macau’s culture and urban landscape. It should foster interaction between humans, the exhibitions, and the current environment and become a platform for [inter] cultural discussions about the future of the city. It should be inspirational and provide the necessary resources to foster local architectural talent. The museum shall implement innovative technologies and sustainable practices, strengthening the image of the city and become a paradigm for future building and planning strategies.
