6 Degree House

Located on a west facing slope in Arvada, Colorado, and designed for a young adventurous family of five; the 6 degree house derives its name from the calculated 6 degree rotation of its southern wing.  This rotation frames specific mountain views and creates a 3 story vertical light shaft; thereby opening the center of the house up to extensive views of the Rocky Mountain Front Range.  Portions of the foundation walls extend into the landscape accentuating the structure and integrating the house into the site as retaining walls. The house was designed to be a construction hybrid with the north and south wings built off site as four prefabricated units placed upon a cast in place concrete walkout basement.  The interstitial space and the garage are to be constructed with prefabricated SIPS panels for an expedited total construction time of about 90 days.   Despite the house and views facing west the project is targeting LEED For Homes utilizing the following techniques: Existing site utilities on an edge development, native landscaping, locally sourced materials, recycled content materials, reduced heat island effect, limited irrigation, prefabrication techniques, Energy Star equipment and appliances, a unique reversible air recycling system; and properly sized overhangs among others.  The owner was included throughout the design process and has been educated to the sustainable features of his house and will be provided a project manual at the end of construction.
