Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) is a landscape architecture firm based in Seattle, Washington. GGN was founded in 1999 by principals Jennifer Guthrie, Shannon Nichol, and Kathryn Gustafson. Our firm’s 40 employees have backgrounds in landscape design, architecture, art, engineering, and ecology.
GGN offers extensive experience in designing high-use landscapes in complex, urban contexts. These landscapes feel serenely grounded and comfortable at all times – whether bustling with crowds, offering moments of contemplation, or doing both at once. GGN’s designs are derived from deep research of each site’s history, ecology, and communities.
GGN’s work is highly varied in scale and type, from furniture to campuses and master plans. Prominent projects include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Campus in Seattle; the Lurie Garden at Millennium Park in Chicago; North End Parks in Boston; Connecting Downtown Cleveland; and the civic park at Hemisfair in San Antonio. GGN also has several projects located in Washington, DC: CityCenterDC; the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery; the National Museum of African American History and Culture; and the winning design for the National Mall Design Competition for Union Square.
GGN was the recipient of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Architecture in 2011. The firm’s project awards include ASLA National Awards of Excellence, ASLA and AIA Honor Awards for Design, Tucker Design Awards, and Great Places Awards from the Environmental Design Research Association.
