"Attendees of NeoCon, the National Exposition of Contract Furnishings, at Chicago's Merchandise Mart were treated to a colossal surprise upon their arrival at the commercial interiors design trade show: A giant multi-colored, multi-faceted sculpture suspended from the ceiling.
The 30-foot, 1,380-pound sculpture, titled "Escalator Canopy" and created by design company Wolf-Gordon, was installed Sunday at the Merchandise Mart's "town square" ahead of the June 11-13 conference.
"Escalator Canopy," a temporary, site-specific creation, is composed of over 250 sides covered in over 500 yards of various upholstery textiles, mirrors and wallcoverings.
NeoCon is no small affair -- it attracts 40,000 attendees each year, features some 700 exhibits and occupies 1 million square-feet of exhibition space spanning 10 floors of the Mart. Among the keynote speakers at this year's convention was former mayor Richard M. Daley."
