Upon studying Ernst Haeckel illustration of Euchitonia and Karakusa Japanese patterns, the primary goal of the tile design was to investigate the negative space and outline that is created once the tiles are configured consecutively.  The tiles can be arranged in various fashions producing different qualities of negative space from symmetrical and uniform to more sculpted were the space moves from a state of compression to expansion.
