The design project for this villa was created for a client who owns a complex of interlocking villas on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Since all the villas are identical, a single design project was developed that applies to the majority of the villas in the complex. The Geometrium Studio team developed the overall design concept, selected materials and furniture, and supervised the project implementation process.
The villa has a size of 11 by 11 meters and a total area of 120 square meters. The layout includes a kitchen-living room with pool access, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms.
The studio team had the task of creating a modern minimalist design while infusing it with a cozy feel through Balinese elements. The villa’s design was based on a light palette, incorporating wooden elements, natural materials, and textured objects to create a light and welcoming atmosphere typical of Balinese style. A section of the villa was designed without windows to allow residents to directly enjoy beautiful views of the rice fields and the pool that surrounds the villa. The vegetation around the villa was complemented by numerous plants inside, creating a unified green space and maintaining the tropical atmosphere.
An essential technique in the villa’s design is the creation of various lighting scenarios, including evening and overhead lighting, as well as the ability to change the color scheme using RGB technology. The use of consistent materials across different areas and rooms helped unify the spaces. For instance, white relief tiles were applied in the dining area and black tiles in the pool area, ensuring a harmonious and stylishly integrated interior where materials seamlessly transition between zones.
In the kitchen-living room, light-colored terrazzo covers the walls and floor, complemented by a ceiling made of veneer, a traditional Balinese material. An accent coffee table crafted from a solid black-painted wood piece stands before a light-colored sofa with textured cushions. Organically shaped accent lights illuminate the sofa area, while a large-weave rug adorns the floor. The kitchen island, made of natural light-colored stone, houses a dishwasher, sink with a trash compartment, and drawers under the cooktop. The floor-to-ceiling storage furniture in the kitchen enhances the space visually and provides functional storage. Behind the white neutral-colored kitchen cabinets, all appliances are hidden behind the facades. In the dining area, relief tiles embellish the wall, with eye-catching black abstract sculptures.
The design principle of the first bedroom focuses on maximizing the views of the rice fields and the pool, extending 80 centimeters beyond the glazing. Panoramic windows are employed to create the illusion of complete immersion in nature from the room. Veneer covers the walls and ceiling of the bedroom, producing a warm and natural ambiance. MDF panels zone the area around the bed, concealing diffused light sources behind them, enhancing the cozy atmosphere.
The second bedroom follows a similar design, with windows facing the driveway. To provide privacy from the street, a volcanic stone wall and an internal atrium with plants were incorporated. These elements not only act as a barrier from the street but also contribute beauty and a tropical essence to the interior.
The design team maintained a theme of naturalness and Balinese style in the bathrooms of the villa. Simple base tiles were enhanced with the addition of baskets, wooden towel rails, and plants to capture the essence of Bali. The bathroom lighting was strategically planned to enhance the sense of space and natural light. Ceiling windows were installed to allow natural light to fill the bathroom, enabling live plants to thrive indoors. Large backlit mirrors were used to visually expand the room and provide adjustable lighting options from bright daytime to cozy evening ambiance. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet with divided mirrors and customizable backlighting was incorporated to further enhance the visual space and add a touch of modern style to the room.
The overall design concept of the villa in Bali merges contemporary minimalism with inviting Balinese elements, creating an ambience of tranquility and serenity. A light color palette, natural materials, diverse lighting fixtures, and textured surfaces aim to connect inhabitants with nature while ensuring comfort. Emphasis was placed on optimizing natural light, utilizing natural materials, embracing scenic views of the rice fields, and crafting secluded nooks for relaxation.
