With a summer free, I took some time to explore new ideas down in Arizona territory. I noticed how many CMU walls surrounded the residential properties throughout all of Pheonix. With the summer heat, and minimal rain, these 8 foot high walls delineating a typical home property killed the only other opportunity for a cool off, a wind or breeze. Besides, with the Southwest USA desert climate making for mostly sand and rock, something other than a plain cmu wall was desperately needed for the residents of Phoenix. With this in mind, I sought after a completely new cmu design, one which would create interest in the screen walls while allowing for some air movement across properties. I came up with the tetrahedron brick. As you can see, it naturally creates a number of patterns depending on brick orientation, and with an interlocking tabs built in, it could be erected with or without mortar.
