Reintegrating the Formerly Homeless: CO-Modular Housing

This project serves as transitional housing for formerly homeless youth and utilizes modular design as the primary method of construction. This design focuses to address the challenge of reacclimating back into society. having ownership and privacy that formerly homeless people face.

From studying Michael Maltzan’s design principles on low income housing, I incorporated similar principles that focus the design on common spaces as a high level approach while scaling down and individualizing the unit to provide a sense of ownership for each unique resident. The common spaces are coded with a bright yellow and are seen on the ground level in the activity area, the laundry room on the third level and the courtyard spaces that are lined with units facing inward.

While there is opportunity to connect with neighbors, units are equipped with moveable furniture that has the flexibility to fit the lifestyle of each resident.
