SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Cord Blood Center, located at the Community Hospital campus in Syracuse, New York, is a central repository for cord blood cryostorage and distribution in New York State . The lab, designed by Francis Cauffman, is a highly specialized and state-of-the-art facility for stem cell research. The building features a glass wall that affords transparency, opening views into a corridor that fully surrounds the laboratory functions. The simple, elegant design emphasizes openness and operational clarity. A green roof that retains 100% of the storm water associated with the building's footprint was also added. The project is currently seeking LEED Gold certification.
