Long time clients tasked us with adding a contemporary rear extension to their period suburban bungalow.  Due to the strict neighborhood design guidelines, we proposed a full restoration of the front facade of the house, with the addition designed to be inconspicuous from the street.  In section, the main floor level of the house steps down to ground level as you move towards the rear of the house.  The allows us to keep the overall height of the second level as low as possible.
