Oakland, CA
Challenged with lack of space to entertain, and limited to a smaller footprint both by budget and a narrow suburban lot, the clients sought a compelling and engaging new home. To meet their requirements, we proposed taking advantage of the mild climate of Silicon Valley by extending their living and dining areas into an outdoor “living room”. This space, surrounded by their home on three sizes, would connect to the living and dining areas through a series of pivoting doors. The second story gallery overlooks the double height space, while the extensive glazing floods the home with natural daylight. A modern take on board and batten cladding serves as a connection to the neighboring traditional homes, and was left untreated to weather to a soft silver gray.
