It's a small community here, but there is great quality work around. A couple of my favs are Peter Pfau (Wes Jones old partner), KuthRanier, Olle Lundberg, Anne Fourgeron, Tanner Hecht, Bruce Tomb and David Baker. Also, SOM, NBBJ and Anshen/Allen have offices here. There are many more firms which I could list...
Interesting depends on where you want to be in a firm and what types of buildings do you want to do. So maybe my list is of no use to you. Berkeley, by the way, is not a great school.
paulett taggart is another. i used to work for her. it's a small office so you'll have lots of responsibility. she's a great person and is very focused. as a bonus, bill stout is her hubby.
architecturally, sf can be conservative. i would expect more of a place that is so socially liberal. people there love their 'painted ladies.'
yeah...jim jennings work is dope. I spoke with him in January about potential work and he had all the staff he needs at that time, which I recall being 3 people including himself.
Mark Cavagnero's office does extremely tight detailing like Jim Jennings and is a much bigger office.
I don't know anything about Gensler in SF.
Just heard that SMWM is hiring lately as is Stark Wether Bondy in Berkeley.
Jim Jennings is amazingly low tech and hi tech at the same time.....his office uses these slick macs to do everything......but no one builds any 3d models....he has a natural shake in his hands (must be his old age) which makes his sketching look awesome....
they even have a pretty large collection of downloads from i-tunes.....great office to work in....if you can get in, i.e.
i also have a friend at smwm who has been there for at least 5 years. he puts in quite a bit of time but enjoys it.
for all the jennings fans out there, check out 'jim jenning architecture: ten projects: ten years.' it's put out by bill stout publishing. nice images and drawings. all photos are in black and white though.
you may have already seen this, but in case it was missed...
SF3: Architecture for High-Density Living
Book launch and exhibition
5:30 PM, AIA SF Gallery, 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600, San Francisco
SF3: Architecture for High-Density Living explores the potential benefits of high-density development through eight innovative projects, using San Francisco as a testing ground. The work stems from a unique collaboration between the CCA Architecture Program and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in an experimental design studio. It builds on SOM's commissioned study of the Transbay Redevelopment Project Area to propose provocative alternatives to current building practice.

Architecture Scene in SAN FRANCISCO. . .
What's it like? Who are the interesting firms to work for? Who's making noise?
With such close proximity to Berkeley, which is suposedly a great school for Architecture, I would expect to hear more from the Bay Area.

Jim Jennings has a nice small office in SOMA. Some beautiful minimal buildings by him around the place.
yeah, jim does some beautiful work. when i was in sf [3 years ago], i think he only had a person and a half working for him.
ya.....he's got about 4 people working with him right now...
I worked on a competition with him and found him to be very open minded and encouraging of young designers....
apparently he has'nt hired anyone for the last 6 years or something like that....
you can always try your luck !!
Anyone know anything about Gensler in SF ???
Their new office is dope !!

I have had several friends work at SMWM and they all seemed to enjoy it.
Thanks Wreckingball,
I'll let my friend know that...

I've seen the book. Nice photography indeed.
He's moved his office to another place in the neighbourhood. He used to have a supercool conference area in his office. Been dismantled now.
Anyone know any Architecture galleries in SF?
the permanent collection at the SFMOMA is pretty decent.....if you can get to see it though....
More like private galleries etc or School related?
I don't know of any.....I'd like to know too...
Try the AIASF website... www.aiasf.org
