Advice for a student with a biomedical background

dystotech

Hi all,

I was hoping that you guys could help me out and give me some solid advice. I am a fourth year Biomedical Science student in Canada with a minor in Architectural Studies. It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that medicine or biomedical research is not where I want my career to go. Instead, I have developed a passion for architecture in the past few years. I was thinking of combining my interests and going into a school that specializes in healthcare architecture.

These are my questions:

1. For those of you who have a masters in architectural design, has it helped you in achieving what you intended on doing with your career? Or has it restricted you only to a very small niche?

2. Given my lack of an architectural background, how do I better develop my portfolio to get into a top architecture school? How can I use my unique background in my portfolio?

Thanks,

Dystotech

Don't do it. You will make much more money, work less, and have more free, social, and romantic time if you stay on your current path.

My answers in order to humour you:

1. It has helped me get in a position where I can see myself moving forward into a career I will be happy with - was the degree important in this? Yes, probably. Could it have been done another way? Yes, probably.

2. Construct small sculpture or architectural projects, structures, freestanding systems. Do projects - art, design, furniture, etc... Take advantage of your technical engineering skills to create things that architects normally would not conceive of or be able to create.

... but seriously, don't do it.

Don't take on substantial student loan debt to do it.

If it's affordable go for it. But you don't need any special background to get into an office that does healthcare design. Yours could help but typically when you graduate you don't end up doing what you have passion for right away. You most likely won't even do healthcare design. If you want to become a specialist or consultant in that realm of architecture you're going to need years of real world experience. Good luck.
