You might want to look into turn of the century NYC residential towers, the first real luxury skyscrapers anywhere: the Dakota, the El Dorado, the San Remo, etc.

Further afield, isn't Renzo Piano's Shard tower in London at least partially residential? And Calatrava did that "Turning Torso" in Sweden...
