Defining susstainable design in products and architecture

0
Fute Design

How would you describe a sustainable product? It is typically more expensive to produce and therefore costs more money. Some companies attempt to illustrate that they are concerned about the global environment and shift towards having some green products in their collections just to stay trendy. For architects it now becomes essential to present LEED certified projects where the human and environmental health is promoted. The key areas LEED concentrates on are:

* sustainable site development
* water efficiency
* energy efficiency
* materials selection
* indoor environmental quality

In Fute' Design we believe sustainability is composed of several factors. First of all the materials that are used in our furniture are mostly raw and renewable. Many of our collections are 100% biodegradable when the materials used include: Abaca, bamboo, rattan, lampakanai, water-hyacinth and buri. Those materials characterize in their extreme turnover in nature. They are harvested instead of drying off which can cause forest fires, a much greater damage. The utilization of those materials actually cures the forest and allows for a controlled spread.

We also apply hand woven techniques and by that create more jobs and reduce the use of machinery which harms the environment as a result of burning toxic carbon dioxide which spreads into the air, soil and water, our products appear more natural suiting the organic , Zen lifestyles our clients try to illustrate within their establishments.

Let me know how you define sustainability? what are the key factors? how can we remain profitable but still sustainable? In private/commercial applications.
