New institution and small towns

Anu Sahu

Hello
I am doing thesis on impact of a new institution (a healthcare teaching institution i.e. hospital + medical college) on urban morphology in a small town.
The site is at the periphery of the town and is also on the catchment area of a lake in the town.
Could anyone help me with examples and case studies related to a similar topic, particularly
1. how an institution of large size in a small town affect the growth and urban morphology
2. how the new growth be integrated with an old town
3. how do we ensure that the new institution and town have symbiotic relationship rather than being detrimental to each other's growth
4. ecological problems from new developments and redevelopment of lake

Many thanks
Looking forward for some help

Rochester MN and the Mayo Clinic might make for a good case study on this topic.
