As a concept? Not sure about as a concept but I know in actual the North American MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) requires that most interstate signs receive 3M reflective sheeting for signage backgrounds and legend. You know? The big green signs with white letters. I know 3M sets the bar on reflective sheeting which includes some pretty cool stuff for any refraction concern. I've seen some awesome signage at LAX where the legend is black and non-reflective in daylight and highly reflective at night when vehicle lights project onto it.

Also, 3M produces an optical lighting film that can be used to diffuse light evenly with minimal light sources. I've personally used that material for some of my projects in Wellington.

The main courtyard at the Getty in LA has a lot of well-orchestrated reflection going on.

I see NLW2...but I'm moreso getting at reflection achieved by materials on the facade like panels or some type of material. Or reflective colors on the building maybe achieved with lighting, natural or artificial

The GSW Building in Berlin is a good example of what I mean...but I'd like to find other ways besides exterior panels.

the previous comment (nimmysnv) sure is an interesting take on "reflection" - though not in architecture... An it doesn't pass the Turing Test.

Reflections have an important role in the work of Robert Irwin, as well as some of Eliassons work. Worth cheking out.

a few herzog & de meuron bldgs seem to have a concept behind the reflective surfaces...







but for high-concept reflection you wont find any better than maya lin's vietnam memorial.

Barkow Leibinger's Trutec building:





which uses polygonal reflective panels to distort the uncertain context of the site.

Also, I'm not sure if reflection drove this concept, but Bruno Fioretti Marquez Architekten's Schweinfurt library uses highly reflective windows to mirror the historical context:

paris based ibos and vitart are very into utilizing reflective facades. look at the palais des beaux arts in lille or the facade of their battered children center in paris, the maison des Adolescents, Cochin Hospital.

I suppose that is not soo much as a quality of relection but refraction. But dichromatic glass gets is hot steamy jazz from the interplay of reflection and refraction.

waffles, i'm glad you posted that picture of the museum in lille! i was trying to think of the architect or name of it, and i couldn't remember. wanted to post it earlier... interesting project.

Somewhere in the Archinect image pages is a picture that shows the view down from a curved glass tower at the patch of glass that has been fried dead by the reflection off the building. I can't find it, but it's hilarious.

Let's not also forget the many fires that were started by Gehry's Disney Concert Hall.
