ARRIS CAD?

davvid

I'm doing some work for an architect that prefers to use a drafting/modeling program called ARRIS CAD. It seems archaic to me.

I've searched online for other opinions and there are some positive reviews that talk about its "completeness" or flexibility. Can anyone share their thoughts/experiences with Arris CAD? Is this just an old outdated program that should probably be scrapped?

Maybe I'll just need to get used to it and adjust my outlook.

Is it still command line or did they add a graphic interface? I haven't seen it since 1988.

I used Arris at an office back in 2002, they don't use it anymore. I would say scrap it, it doesn't interface well with other software and is really quite different from everything else, meaning it's not easy to pick up even if you know Autocad/Revit/etc.....

I used it briefly in 2002-03... It was a Unix-based platform that tried to do a bad impersonation of Architectural Desktop, but wasn't very good at it. Each drawing "layer" is like a separate xref that had to be loaded/unloaded. Toll Brothers (builder of spec McMansions) used ARRIS at the time, so most of our staff were former Toll Brothers employees simply because they knew the software. You can imagine how that impacts a firm's design sensibility. That firm ultimately scrapped ARRIS in favor of ArchiCAD around the time I left.

back in the day '93-'95 I was at a firm that used it. it was pre-desktop and very nice once the blocks and attributes were loaded. - could do schedules and 3-d pretty well.

pretty close to pre-revit with select k 24 joist, draw line and a k-24 joist was drawn in plan and section.

we scrapped it in '95 for plan acad.

fond memories using a 1200 baud modem to connect tothe other office.

archaic at its best?

don't know how good it is for business these days

would anybody even want to live like this?

I do sometimes worry about having all this data that is so potentially obsolete. I imagine, however, if I offered free dxf files of the data it would all have interesting other lives. Perhaps one day.

our models came out way better.

the arris cad trainer had custom3-d blocks for all of his interior cabinets and furniture (he did restaurants and hair salons). since he could drop in smart blocks he could do a walk-thru in no time. the renderings looked as good as 3-d studio models did at the time. and did I say it produced parametric schedules.

I have been working with ArrisCAD for since 2008. I am using a 2001 software version; however, the newest version is awesome. It has the feel of AutoCAD but for a fraction of the cost.

Conversion tools are available. They have fixed the zoom feature so that you are able to use the mouse wheel for quick response. Everything about the software is very good and it will stand up to AutoCAD in many ways.

It works with line weights and not colors, which give a clearer and more precise printing, not only as ArrisCAD prints but in the conversion to AutoCAD format, if that is needed.

Translation from AutoCAD to ArrisCAD is excellent. Don't count this software out. They have made great strides in development.

Go to their website ArrisCAD.com and check out the latest and greatest software. Free download of the software Version 9.4. It is a full working software; however, the translations tool is a small extra cost and any work produced can be printed but it can not be saved to file. For about $1,400 you can have the full working software plus the translator.

My guess is that this product will beat AutoCAD many times over and for a lot less of out of pocket expense

By the way, check out blissfuldrafting.com and see the difference when a dwg is covverted to a jpg to post verses an ArrisCAD db file that is converted.

The menu item New Construction Projects are done with ArrisCAD and the As-Built Projects are done with AutoCAD.

Zoom in on the files and see the difference.

Let the little guy make his mark in this high overpriced software world with a product that is easy to learn and will get the job done quickly.

AutoDesk is just another MicroSoft type company that has decided they are better than everyone and that they should command respect for a product that is overpriced.

Just my opinion but something to consider.

Considering there's no images in your wordpress posts and your linking to a website that's also the same as your username... I'm inclined to believe that you're biased, a cheapskate and technically incompetent.

Unicorn Slaughter...so sorry that you have such a big stick shoved somewhere that is not too comfortable...evidently you have many problems, one of which you are a descendent of Adam and therefore have nothing but hate, arrogance, pride, jealousy not to mention that you are already dead and without any hope in this life.

Get a grip and remember that this is not all about you. Considering that you have 31 Entries and 1593 Comments it looks like you are still in a infant stage and looking for attention.

I will pray for you. And by the way, thank you for your comment.

Oh yes, one more consideration...you seem to not have any occupation nor any bio listed so I am wondering if you even exist in real life and whether or not you are not also, how should I say this...

...biased, a cheapskate and technically incompetent.

Again, thank you for your comment and for the advertisement to my site. Much appreciated and God Bless!

I have been working with UnicornCAD for since 3022. I am using a 588 B.C.E. software version; however, the most magical version is pure uncut sprinkles. It has the feel of AutoCAD but for a fraction of the cupcakes.

Magic v are available. They have fixed the seer stone feature so that you are able to use the dagger of movement for quick summoning. Everything about the ye old magic paper is very sparkly and it will stand up to AutoCAD in many ways.

It works with pretty ponies and not rainbows, which give a clearer and more precise scroll, not only as UnicornCAD manifests itself but in the casting of spell of transformation to AutoCAD format, if that is needed.

Speaking in tongues from AutoCAD to UnicornCAD is SUPER DUPER SPINKLES AND TITS. Don't count this magic paper out. They have made great strides in summoning the dark unicorn lord.

Go to their website UnicornCAD.com and check out the latest and greatest magic paper. A thieve's bounty of the magic paper, a version made from the hairs of a pegasus. It is a fully leveled magic paper; however, the spells of transformation is a small extra pence of gold and any work produced can be manifested but it can not be immortalized in the sand. For about three dozen fairy hookers, you can have the full working magic paper plus the spells of transformation.

My guess is that this magical item will beat AutoCAD many times over and for a lot less of cupcakes!

Unicorn Slaughter...hey! I would like to apologize for the response that I sent earlier. It was out of line and totally unprofessional.

Since this is a DISCUSSION about ArrisCAD and not personal the dialog that we have had is inappropriate and unacceptable.

I apologize for responding with the words I said. I can not take them back; however, I would like you to know that any further discussion we may have will be about ArrisCAD NOT AutoCAD and that I will keep it in line as a professional.

I hope that I have not offended you in any way...I am sorry and I offer you my sincere humble regret for speaking the way I did.

Best to you in your endeavors.
