Modern additions...

Bluesman7

Hey guys,

I am working on a project for a Seminary school in Atlanta and they want a modern/contemporary student center to act as the "gateway building" for the campus. There is a pretty interesting traditional building that we are trying to convince the school to keep (at least parts) of it.

I am looking for some examples of modern additions to traditional buildings, kind of like Machado and Silvetti's work. I found a couple of examples searching the forum, but would love more.

Any examples would be much appreciated.

Thanks

bluesman,

depends on how you want to approach the issue - there are more radical additions/extensions to traditional work and more subtle/humble additions.

for example, gunnar asplunds goteberg law courts building is a clearlymodern addition, but is very respectful of the scale and materials of the older building. one picture here

david chipperfield has taken a similar approach with his work in berlin - check out his website for several examples, especially the neues museum.

rafael moneo's prado extension is a slightly different tack, but still effective. i also love his town hall, which technically isn't an addition, but i like the attitude. prado below...

something of a smaller scale might include the louisiana museum of art, in the netherlands. i can't place a good picture of where the museum links to the existing house.

a final offering might be clark & menefee's coker house - a beautiful glass/steel addition to an old home in charleston. images, such as they are, could be found at wg clark's website

The massing is very, very low-key for the modern addition. The old estate serve as the entrance portal from which a few small modern corridors leads out into the landscape.
