unfolding maya poly surfaces

Gordon

is there a way to snap a poly plane flat to the grid in maya, if the origial orientation is in space in some random configuration?
i want to do this manually first, then maybe use an unfold script.

i think it's easier export poly surfaces to rhino as an obj file, then convert meshtonurb in rhino, and unroll surfaces in rhino

I must warn to export to Rhino for unfolding, --- unfolding shuld work with entities created in Rhino , I don't know how complicated though --- but Rhino don't accept unfolding of AutoCAD meshes so maybe Rhino only accept it's own mesh entities.

in 3ds you can get the unfold info from a channel...

there may be a similar way in maya

Lamina works well too, even creates a PDF that shows you how to assemble the unfolded pieces as well as taking into account the thickness of whatever material you'll be cutting the design from…
