thats pretty cool... they are saying you'll be able to put your own photo's in soon... that could be a pretty amazing tool... granted, one would probably need hundreds of photos of a site to get as seamless a representation as the ones they show, but it might be worth a days photographing for the amazing backgrounds for presentation work you could get.

I was imagining being able to overlay photos with a 3D model, then over time, as the construction progresses, the model would be replaced by the actual photos of the space.
ok, i'm old so someone'll have to splain it to me. i watched the video. it looks really cool. but how might it be useful to me?
and do i have to have a crazy-ass high res camera to get the sort of resolution he's showing? how many maps look as good at 1/200 as they do at 1/2? do we have the images that would make this system sing? i'm always skeptical of displays like this > you know he's been practicing for that lecture and is showing all the zippy stuff that it would take months/years to learn.
Steven,
You can play with it live if you follow the first link.
I'm imagining being able to take the 3d model made for presentations and renderings, then as a project is underway overlaying that with photos from site visits, so that photos of foundation, framing, plumbing, etc through drywall are mapped onto this 3d space and as builts are done! With much richer information than typical drawings could ever convey.
And yes once microsoft puts this on their multi touch tables we'll all be feeling more like Tom Cruise.

Microsoft Photosynth
Some way cool tech from Microsoft, if they get this up and working well I will never again be confused looking at photos from site visits.
Oh yeah, it might ask to install a little plug-in into your browser, but trust me, it's worth it.
won't work on my computer. bummer.
hmm, might have to try looking at it with Internet explorer or firefox.

Thanks for the link xacto, even more jaw slackening when you see his presentation and really understand what it could do.
yes, the video explains it really well. Literally gave me goosebumps!
So.... the question now is, how does this get translated by the internet porn industry?? ;)
That's so rad I think I just peed a little.
Wow. That is pretty sweet.

wow, I can imagine this becoming very helpful in site research, and for perspective shots.
