Watup everybody, I'm currently applying for M.arch. Here's a rough draft of my portfolio http://issuu.com/j_ong/docs/portfolio2012_roughdraft. Please critique it. It's just a rough draft and I know it needs a lot of work but I would like to get some advice on which direction to take before I start rebuilding it.
Also, do you guys think my artwork is good enough? Be straight-up, should I even put it in my portfolio?
I personally would remove the hand drawings and artwork..but others may keep them in.
I like your first three projects, but I don't like how they're laid out... seems like there's too much on every page. The text is too big everywhere...it detracts from your work and renderings which are nice. I'd blow up one of your renderings for each project into one full page...sort of as a setting out point.
I prefer your renderings that don't have the wireframe or whatever...they seem heavy handed. I also like the plan for your first project...the others could use the same treatment. I know this is undergrad work, but at this point you can work to bring it all up to the same/similar level I think. Others may disagree, but i think if you have the time you could work to make things more cohesive.
Your models should be shot either professionally or in a better situation..like not with bad lighting and not on a table...or they shouldn't be included.
And I think the spaghetti tower is out for me...don't you have any other architectural projects that could work? Only three?
Your work is good and interesting...it just needs to be reformatted as you said. Hopefully this isn't too critical...I think with a few tweaks it could be really nice.
I agree with most of the above. Overall, I think the layout needs some work. Be mindful of the text size you use, margins/how close text is to the edge of the page etc. Also, perhaps the images can be more consistent in their sizing and alignment.
Try to achieve the highest resolution/quality images you can achieve. If the image is pixelated, I wouldn't bother putting it in, especially if the portfolio will be printed.
I'm torn on the artwork. I think it is important to include some personal work in the portfolio, but again, maybe if you use higher resolution images, and lay it out on the page more consistently, it will work.
Lastly, as stated by the person above. Cohesion. Try to achieve an overall sense of cohesion that pulls the whole portfolio together. Whether it's through the consistent use of a certain color palette in your drawings and diagrams (or lack of color), or the way your projects are represented. The portfolio, down to it's minute details, is a reflection of who you are as a designer.
Keep pushing it, you've got some good work. Highlight it.
Try to develop a structure to your layout. It looks like a lot of images on a page, and its like that page after page making the entire book feel homogeneous. MVDA has good comments
larslarson- Definitely wasn't too critical. By all means, have at it. Shit, attempt to make me cry lol. Hmmm, I can't re-photograph the models cause I already threw them out (the hell was I thinking?). Also, I have more projects but they're pretty shitty lol. I'm only confident with these 3. Do you guys think that's enough?
mvda and lostarchitect- Thanks! Definitely gonna revamp the graphical layout and get higher resolution pics.
sandhill- I'm applying to UW, Berkeley, UMN, PSU (Portland), UO, and UVA
A few questions:
Do you guys recommend making my portfolio smaller in size (right now it's at 8.5 x 11)? I had trouble filling up the pages with good quality work so maybe a smaller size may help with that.
Also, is 3 arch projects too few? My limit is 20 pages (gotta cut it down to 12 for Berkeley), am I using too many pages on each project?
Critique my portfolio please

I think it's a good start.

Noypi,
Where do you plan to apply? This makes a big difference in how you present your work.
This is a good start for most colleges. The projects are full but the images could use a punch!
However if you were interested in a very acedemic ivy then you will want to show much more of a process and how you came to your final design.
Oh shit, thanks for the great feedback everybody!

Overall it looks good, better than mine. Nice work. Wish I pushed myself further in undergrad.
Hey guys, I'm thinking about removing the last spread. Possibly deleting the last page and combining elective works with hand drawings. Advice?
