thats true brooklyn1,
its ironic that you get oodles of feedback from all the studios, but when it comes to the portfolio...there is nothing said about its quality. I hate that.

Also, I hear they tend to create a class based on chemistry too, so sometimes, tehy selcte based on how the person will fit into the class.

doin_time, sadly i think non-acceptance notifications (see what i did there? i won't say the "r" word, i just won't!) tend to be form letters of the, "thanks but no thanks, many strong candidates this year, can't take them all, etc." variety. unfortunately this whole process sort of happens in a vacuum - you throw your application into a hat and it comes out either stamped yea or nay with zero explanation for either.

brooklyn, i swear someone in my office asks me every day what schools i've heard from - it's all i can not to grit, "if i'd heard something good, i'd have told you. obviously i either have bad news or no news."

I have just stopped answering the "have you heard anything" questions politely. Every morning I come in to a barrage of them, and I tried the "i promise i'll tell you when i hear" response but people just dont get it! I find myself turning into much more of a bitch now and answering with a short "what do you think?" or just staring at them and not answering at all. People are starting to get the hint...

yeah, the best part was this morning that question was accompanied by my boss telling me about how someone else he wrote recommendations for has already gotten three acceptances, including one to one of the schools i haven't heard from.... that was pretty awesome.

i think she applied for urban planning/design instead of m.arch though.

I am new to these forums, but a friend of mine told me about it.
Regarding the 2008 acceptance letters:
I have applied to the M.Arch Degree to Sci-Arc, Ohio State, University of Illinois at Chicago, Lawrence tech, and the University of Michigan.

I live in Ann Arbor, MI so I am in state tuition for both the UM and Lawrence tech.

About 10 days ago, I received a rejection letter from Illinois. A letter that came in one small letter sized envelope reading:

" The graduate committee of the school of architecture has reviewed applications for the 2008-2009 academic year. After careful consideration of your material, I regret to inform you that your application has been denied. The decision did not come easily and was made only after evaluation of your academic record, statement of goals, letters of recommendation, GRE scores and your portfolio of creative work."

I then went on a 6 day trip to Maryland and got back home late last night, to find a very large package from UM waiting for me. An all white packaging with a University of Michigan stamp on it. I unwrapped it to find it was a white lab coat. Inside was a large book and many pamphlets/posters. Inside of the book was an envelope detailing my acceptance to the University of Michigan, and how I will owe $19,000 for in state tuition.
I started screaming and jumping up and down like a school girl.

My mom then informed me that the package came about 3 days ago.

Exciting times ahead.

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

the past 2 nights I've had dreams that I got into schools. Last night was so real: I logged onto the UT "status check" website and it flashed in green magenta technicolor "CONGRATUALTIONS!" like one of those terrible popup banner ads. That dream was so literal, I really believed it.

Then I woke up to remember I haven't heard anything yet... :/

Congrats to everybody who got into UMich - I wish I had applied there now as a lab coat in the mail sounds exciting.

The Kaplan courses are good if you're not disciplined to study. It helps you stay on track. They also do provide a plethora of resources.

la_la I know exactly what you mean! Yesterday I had a voice mail but I was on the subway so I couldn't check it. Needless to say, by the time I got off the train I had totally convinced myself it was a school calling to say i got in. It wasn't. Then I was sure there'd be a letter waiting so I power walked home (looking like an asshole), but nothing.

I'm also wishing I got a white lab coat, it's a really nice touch. Congrats everyone!!

A few weeks ago I had this dream where I was walking down the street near my house. I noticed a bunch of mail dumped by the side of the road... (at that time our mail lady was mixing up the mail in the neighborhood). I picked it up and there were letters from each of the schools that I had applied to. Somehow I had enough self control in my dream to not open them right there. For some odd reason I ran back to my house to open them. Right as I was about to open the one from Harvard them I woke up to the noise of my brother on a snowmobile outside the house.

Shelby at sciARC admissions just told me this...

" Each year, we receive an average of 225 applications for the M.Arch 2 program, and we are looking for a class of 45 students. We initially admit around 70 students and later on, if necessary, we will begin to admit students from the waitlist. "

Probably doesnt ease the tension but a friend of mine that is at UCLA now said they finished deciding about a week ago...should be sending them out in the next week.

Background for me...applied to GSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Pratt as an March II (post-professional).

guess that was more of a status than a background...

Rose I don't know the # but it's a lot - about 20% of applicants are admitted, and then I'm sure they can anticipate how many will matriculate... Are they really going to call me at work? !

hasn't anyone created an app that refreshes email every .02 seconds yet !?!

sci-arc notifications seem to come late. I don't expect admittance, but not knowing until April is not good.

I was accepted to UM, and they want verification if I am coming to recruitment weekend by March 20th.

The only other school that I applied to that I would consider over UM is Sci-Arc, so in the off chance that Sci-Arc accepts me, things could get confusing.

Do you think the group of people who posts here is the same group of people who posts on gradcafe?

I was just curious whether or not I could expect to find extra information there, but I suspect a lot of the people are the same

Mar 7, 08 3:53 pm  ·
 ·
snarkitekt

probably a lot of the same people, but at least gradcafe has a fairly standardized set of information so it can be more expediant to look there.

So I called FIT (i applied there for Toy Design) because there was something weird on my application status online, but the guy wasn't sure what it meant. then i asked when we would know, he said the last of the letters went out today. Fine, that's all I asked, But then WITHOUT ME ASKING he said "i really shouldn't tell you if you got in or not, but what's your name?" i said "Annie", he said "yea, i really dont remember if you got in or not. sorry!"

I NEVER ASKED HIM IF I GOT IN OR NOT. Now I'm afraid I didn't get in and he just didn't want to tell me. Shit

aww don't worry, brooklyn, he really probably doesn't remember! i'm sure there are plenty of people out there that have no problem rejecting us to our face. at least you know to be expecting something in the mail soon!

For those who haven't gotten their lab coat from UM or phone call from UW, (congrats to all who have, btw) what do you all think? Is it appropriate to abandon hope for those two?

Patterns on thegradcafe.com seem a little inconclusive, however I figure a business week--give or take a few days--is plenty of time for the schools to distribute their acceptances. Apply this rule to both UW and UM and it doesn't look so hopeful.

Thoughts about this rationale?

Hey everyone, I just got an email from the housing department at Harvard about available apartments and securing a lease. This seems odd, unless everyone applying to the GSD gets the email... Did any of you get the same email?

Well, it wasn't from admissions or anything, but from the Affiliated Leasing Team. It was a harvard.edu address, however. I'm not going to over-analyze this, as Harvard is a big reach for me!

There was a phone number attached to the email. Would it be insane to call it and just ask if they are emailing to admitted students, or how they got my contact email?

Yes, I know I am being neurotic, but in all this absence of responses its so easy to jump on the smallest notion of anything.

i think you should.

Mar 7, 08 4:51 pm  ·

thats a really good idea actually ... cause it makes it out like you're not trying to pester them. just that you dont want to commit to housing unless you're sure you're in. do it. let us know the result!

Sambar, i don't know if this helps...but i went to UW for undergrad and some of my classmates continued on to get their masters there. I remember a few of them hearing quite a bit before (maybe even a few weeks) others who were also admitted. So, i am pretty sure for that particular school, admissions can happen over quite a long time. I don't think they just send out one wave of acceptances.

asbuck.

I applied to Princeton last year...I think they took like 15 ppl. I was so pissed cuz they rejected me with an email..this was on March 10th I think.

I am hoping you get a fart from Stan rather than this email

well in light of the week's joys, disappointments, and general LACK OF MAIL ANYONE CARES ABOUT, i say it's drinkin time

Mar 7, 08 4:56 pm  ·

Okay, this is odd. They said they email all the applicants, which is odd because some of us didn't get the email. The lady was short on the phone, and I intended up asking more questions to seem like I was interested in housing, although she initially presumed I was already admitted. It is the Harvard Real Estate Services that emailed me.

I felt kind of dopey on the phone. I wanted to ask, "how did you get my email address?" but that seems too aggressive. I am going to take it for what it is right now... an indication of nothing!
