1] GSD grads are only there to use your firm as a bridge before they open their own practice
2] GSD grads are their to steel your clients
3] GSD grads think they are better/smarter than you and all your staff
4] GSD grads think they deserve more compensation because they have a gsd degree
1] Architects are only there to use your firm as a bridge before they open their own practice (which will inevitably fail, forcing them to come crawling back)
2] Architectsare their to lose your money
3] Architects think they are better/smarter than you and all your staff (which is true)
4] Architects think they deserve more compensation because they have an architecture degree which took 8 years to complete, 3 1/2 years of internship, passed AREs, a license, and $50K in student loans.
I don't think "make shitty employees" is only limited to GSD. I am pretty sure it is more or less anyone who went Ivy.
Are they really "better designers"? I thought they were just really good bullshitters. They hand off all the rendering work to cheap chinese labor- they only do massing models in SketchUp! and talk really fluffly like, and then... expect the big money for it while they go on MSN and talk about how amazing work and a designer they are.
Lets not hate on GSD...Although, I do have a few momorable stories from GSD grads in our office. Like the guy who did all his plan details for a medical office building in photoshop. They were all stunning little works of art that he spent 2.5 weeks on which should have taken him 2 days to do in autocad..
My observations has been that ivy grad's in our firm tend to position themselves early on as "designers" and seem to have little interest in the technical side of the profession. Granted, it's unfair to generalize becuase you always end up short changing someone....It frustrates the hell out of me trying to watch a ivy school grad with 2 masters degrees use SketchUp for construction drawings....
did that guy not realize that's what the majority of JIZZ-DEE grads do when they go to work for firms like OMA, H + dM, etc?
frickin idiot!
he really should be thankful he has a job. My first job out of school, i interviewed w/ 20 firms. none of the "top tier" firms i interviewed with made an offer - humbling, to say the least. could be worse, he could be painting a bathroom for his boss at a shitty firm, with the turd standing over his shoulder telling him he's not painting correctly, and that he could do a better job himself (well, since you aren't doing anything but looking at gay porn anyway... why dontcha?)
relax, all these schools are full of slackers and stars. throw whatever school name you want in these conversations/comments, but the results/insults are the same. archinect should be more than a little pysch ward for architects. get over it.
Why GSD students make shitty employees
can someone answer this for me
sorry...I figured that I could resolve some of my insecurities about my architectural education by talking shit about another school
mdler....your not stinky are you?
no.
Ha ha. Yale Blows!
(for those you inclined to take this personally, it is only a joke from an old thread...)
MIT blows bigger chunks :)
mdler
just wondering why you mentioned if they make bad employees.. is this a real life experience?
yep
apparently DAAP makes good employees, bad designers
GSD makes good designers, bad employees??
umm what is DAAP if i may ask? and how bad is bad for GSD?
mdler, but what about the kids who went to UC and Harvard?
the worse of both worlds?
cj w, DAAP stands for the College of Design Architecture Art and Planning at UC.
again ... very reminiscent of "yale blows"
hi wonderk ... been a while ...
Yale does indeed blow. It's kept on blowing for a while now.
And I don't know about employees, but the one I've met sure made a shitty employer

I wouldnt steel anyone, but concreting clients sounds like a good idea
all this time I thought it was the mandatory metamucil in our coffee cups...
or maybe the x-acto-lax?

i worked with a GSD grad who basically said that they shouldnt build models because they went to GSD
