I will have no idea what I am actually allowed to take on my plane until I show up on Sunday. I have been getting mixed signals all day....one report says this, the airline says that, a bulletin says this........ All I'm saying is, if I have to check my iPod, are they going to guarantee that it will be there when I get my bags at Gatwick? Because I think this is a great way for baggage handlers to make off with some cool shit....
i just came back to the states via gatwick this morning.
it pretty much sucked. long queues. lots of searching, lots of waiting on the plane on the runway. and most passengers are cranky, which i just don't understand as it crankiness is pretty unproductive in this sort of situation.
i read a lot of newspapers and got pretty blitzed on the flight as i had nothing to eat before i started drinking my complimentary scotch. man, and that inflight radio is something else.
but, things should be getting better i would think, after the airlines have accomodated all the people who were delayed a few days ago.
A, as we stood in a hour-long security line this morning, I asked my husband about looking into Amtrack for his next trip to NYC. Your wish is mine too - flying is such a pain in the ass these days I'm ready toavoid it entirely.
The thing is, I don't mind incredibly detailed searches and intense security if I feel it actually is doing any good. Six days ago the TSA "guard" at the security line in Indianapolis airport lazily glanced at my ID and scrawled an ink line across my boarding pass and waved me through: but I had handed her the wrong boarding pass, the one for the second leg of my trip, not the one originating in IND. She fucked up, and sadly I am certain that's the state of most US airport "security" these days. Much worse, a month ago my husband carried an exacto knife and spare blades in his laptop bag on a trip to and home from NYC - neither airport caught it, and he didn't realize it until he got home and started unpacking. It's all a farce.
Also, I tucked a lip balm ball (like chapstick but in a little spherical plastic container) into my son's snack pouch today and got it onboard fine despite it being a "gel" - thank god because I can go a lot longer without H2O than I can go w/o lip balm! Also, we brought our laptops and cell phones both onto the plane like usual - but that's for domestic US travel, it's different abroad I guess.
lb – I couldn't agree with you more about the inadequacies of security checkpoints. Getting banned items through a security checkpoint is unacceptable and it should deem embarrassment for security officials. On the flip side (in support of the TSA officials) they are only looking to match the name of the boarding pass with the name on your identification – they do not care what leg of the flight you are flying.
vado!
carry ons are/were banned from the UK to the US. but my flight was still 3.5 hours late, and i had to produce a receipt for the newspaper i purchased, and everyone boarding the plane got patted down.
although, i did get a very fashionable clear plastic bag, courtesy of gatwick airport.
you would think that with no carry ons, de-boarding the plane would go swiftly, but that is not so true, because, i have decided, that people are ridiculous.
here's an idea. i call it friendly flight. a database of uncrazy people, who travel together. this would not just screen for terrorists but also for those people who drink too much in the airport lounge and then cause trouble on the plane, children, people who talk too loud and too often, people who sit next to you and talk about airline crashes, etc. to get on the list you must have a background check and go through some interviews and also pass an interview with a few of the other members. friendly flight. would be a good marketing strategy for an airline.
TERROR TERROR TERROR in the UK
well it will be rich when ever we finally meet up for our epic showdown. It has to be at the OK corral...I won't meet you anywhere but there.
i am home today working and listening to npr, god they have been talking about this all goddamn day.

why don't they just ban carry ons. that would cut down the security check lines.

WonderK- check your insurance policy as electronic items such as laptops and ipods etc are generally only covered if taken as hand luggage.
