Learning from this dutch firm about Blob

jlxarchitect
thenewold

he's a clown who designs hellish themescapes. you can think of his work as the architectural equivalent of the cars wrecked in drunk driving accidents which are displayed in front of fire stations as an object lesson of the consequences of irresponsibility. you'll see his ideas for moving spaces hissing and clicking on MTV all too soon I'm afraid.

I see the similarities orEqual. But can Kas Oosterhuis and Ben Van Berkel be called "blob architects"?

Yes, they infact can.

Although Kas and Ben do explore in the realm of "blobtecture", I would say that they're nothing more than open-minded experiments. I find that they're built work are very very interesting and a lot of them do not resemble "blob" structures. I do understand the negative reactions that the U2 Tower design by Kas has received (I'm not particularly interested in it either but just like most of us that's only due to subjectivity), but again, I think that it's only a healthy exploration with future architectonic possibilities.

In short, I admire the creativity.

"vertical tower and the horizontal building block are seen as one complex shape, evoking the power of a muscular arm, upper arm and forearm " (description of U2 Tower http://www.oosterhuis.nl/quickstart/index.php?id=120)

hmmm, i think this projects belongs more in this thread:

saying that Kas Oosterhuis is a clown is just an expression of deep ignorance, since the man has an incredibly large body of research regarding the digital IT tech related to architecture

the u2 tower is not a project for which you could really judge his work, and if you really want to LEARN, read deeper and research more about his work

van berkel is a great architect, although hes been too blobby lately

architects should experiment... with models. and then build the best ones. this u2 tower is a little lame.

totally agree with mauOne! everyone's comment that Kas is a "clown" and his work is "stupid" or "weak" is purley subjective and nothing more.

love van berkel
hate oosterhuis !!!
hate hate hate blob architecture !

"the man has an incredibly large body of research"
does not mean his work is good.. i agree calling him a clown is quite dumb !
but a good research body does not always produce good architecture
and i think the U2 tower is a fair example of that !

yup, Lynn is an example of that too. It was/is just too easy to take snap shots of morphs and animations and call it 'process'.

I used to love Van Berkel, but as soon as he went to the dark side (ie the blob side), that was when I had to turn away.

I am all for process, but I think academia gets far too caught up in the virtual. It's fine if it's paper architecture, but at least do a nice rendering or build a good model. It's just damn boring now and has looked the same for almost 15 years now.

Stagnation. I dare a school to ban Maya, if only for one semester! Any takers?
