Check out the video that's in the link below...really cool stuff...I love the new Time Machine auto backup software...I know that people will say that there are similar software/hardware out there, but face it, the majority of us here are here because we are passionate about design, and it's evident that Apple is too.
I never know what to think of the mac/PC commercials. on the one hand, they're kind of cute and funny and play on stereotypes, but on the other, the claims they make are debateable at best, and in some cases, just plain wrong. My inner geek always feels bad for laughing.
the mac pro and leopard look interesting, though. I've got a couple sticking points- the quadro 4500 upgrade is way overpriced - I'd want to buy one elsewhere... but I might get one once leopard ships.
the automatic back up looks really cool and hopefully should encourage people to back up, I've seen so many people cry when they've lost everything! The ichat screen sharing (not on video, check the leopard page) looks really cool, imagine being IT or cad trainer at work and you could just use that to solve the problem. The Mac Pro is damn cheap, considering you get a high performance server chip inside and copared to what dell offers.
in the presentation, they said only 6% of mac users have automatic back up.....does that prove most mac users are just home hobbyists and non-serious geeks?
i bet that statistic is the same on the windows front, most people don't back up often enough if at all. other people i know don't back up at all, i remember a guy lost everything just before our midterm jury tables. a lot of the software for backing up isn't really intuitive and it takes time to do it so people avoid doing it. I've even spoken to people who don't even know what it is. I use 3 different back up programs:
superduper (makes a bootable copy of the entire drive)
slingshot (wireless synicing of files, use it to sync my document folder between my powermac and my macbook pro)
chronosync (syncing files when plugging in external drives)
yeah it's overkill but at least all my work is safe
oh and .mac backup to save my all important stickies and favorites on my safari bookmark bar.
i like having a bootable drive so IF my machine goes kaboom i can just plug the drive in another one and continue working with the exact same software setup.
wow, amazing setup frem001. so, all those programs work seemlessly? I was thinking of doing the same thing but as for now, I just use an external hard drive to just manually backup whatever I think is important. Not the safest thing to do but better than nothing.
And another cool feature is the new backgrounds for ichat. Now I can be in the bathroom while taking a dump and talking to a client without them knowing it. haha
ok my backup setup is overkill, something like superduper would be great for most people since it does a full backup and makes the drive bootable. The support is also fantastic and it's quite a cheap backup app, otherwise carbon copy cloner might be the next best thing to superduper, but isn't universal.

I'm so glad I have a Mac :)
I love the intro by the "PC". I love that guy.
haha...me too
I'm more excited about Spaces than anything else. Hopefully it works better than some of the 3rd party options out there.

so when a program crashes on your pc- do you send the error notification to Bill Gates? I always feel like I'm stickin' it to the man when I do....
Damn pc at work! Always happy to go home to my mac.
but if autocad runs on a mac, is it still a mac?

i know that this mac user didn't back up..and it's going to
cost me...as my hardrive just went away...i'll be backing
up from now on.
then again i don't do any work other than portfolio work on
my mac (i did back that up)
ah well..at least i'll get to completely organize my mac again.
