Can't tell too much of Beijing, so I'll leave that to others, but here is a list for Shanghai. Not all what you would find in magazines, but great to see:

*Lujiazui - First metro stop on Pudong. See The Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao and the under construction World Financial ctr. Have a drink at the 88th floor of jin mao, only one floor under observation deck and only costs you for the drinks. Check out the atrium in the hotel on the way up (56th floor or something)

*Xujiahui - An amazing metro hub in the southwest of the city. A must see.

*The intersection of the north-south and the east-west elevated highways

*The Urban Planning Exhibition in Peoples Square - model of Shanghai

*Xintiandi - Entertainment district that is rebuilt using the materials and style of a historical district

*Nanjing Dong lu - some claim it's superficial, but it's not, just free from foreigners. This is the essence of big Chinese cities.

*The Bund - The core of the western influende in Shanghai. Beautiful buildings, and great view of Pudong (the newly build east side of the river). Take a boatride for an hour, it's a grerat view at night.

*Nanpu Bridge

More traditional architecture and local life:

*Huaihai Park - lot's of social life happens here year round. Huaihai road near Huangpi road

*Yu Yuan (garden) - Beautiful garden in the old town. Beware the "bazar" that surrounds it.

*Old Town

*Walk into as many lowrise blocks as you can, some are beautiful, som are worn, some will disappear in a month, but all are fantastic.

*Zhujiajiao - one of many canal towns.

Good restaurants / bars:

*Shintori (great, not very expensive)
*People 7 (next to shintori, have a drink here afterwards)
*Face bar (colonial style villa/garden. nice thai resto upstairs)
*Bonbon (nightclub)
*Fabrique (nightclub)
*Babyface (nightclub, mainly chinese)
*JZ (nice jazzplace)
*lots of chinese places.
*...and if you can afford it, spend $50 on a sunday brunch buffet at one of the hotels (marriot or other) and get a free flow of champange!

Interesting offices here:

*MadaSPAM
*SURV
*StudioShanghai
