I know this is a tough question to quanitfy with the cost of materials all over the place these days, but generally if I were to build a 2000 sf. modern home with materials like wood, brick, concrete, limited metal, how much do you think I should budget? (price per sf?)
Got back bids of $900 - $1000/sf in NYC for a roof garden in 2001. The client balked at the price tag, so we substituted ipe for all the dimensional stonework and built it ourselves for $125/sf.

A volume house builder here in the UK could do it for about £60k not including land costs.
He would then sell it for £150-£250 dependant on location.
If you are building it yourself say $100.00 psf w/ out land.
With a GC you are looking at $135 psf. This is for North Lake County IL.
In LA you're looking at $250/SF with at GC. Maybe $200 for a low-budget version.
it all depends - like anything, on location
but I've found mostly is revolves around U$100 psf unless you live in one of those major metropolis or exclusive Caribbean islands

we're deezIning mountain monstrosities for $350/sf - 2nd homes - occupied about 3 wks/year - we're not even in aspen!
i forgot to mention that that is not including land. the avg. lot is going for about $500,000 for 1/2acre.
good thread
you could pick up a copy of The New American Home volumes. Most of the projects have the cost in there as well as a few details.
recently received builder quote for modest 2100 sf house i designed, in rural northeast us, at $285000 - not incl site costs - or 136/sf.
