Being a Michigan architecture student myself, I would recommend to you Careerbuilder.com. I recently landed a job, and I know from my troubles that Monster listed very few architecture related jobs, usually less than 10, while careerbuilder listed around 50. Also, try your school's career services center. I was lucky enough to have an alum interested in my work and give me an opportunity. You can't beat that.
monster is probably just going to get you spam from insurance companies that say "You're just what we're looking for" and you get the same email every Wednesday. My advice is to just pick somewhere that you want to be and go there.
the problem lies with the of the architecture 'profession'. starting at the early years in school with scholarly professors who don't know a thing about the real profession. feeding young minds glossy images of architectural pornography - and then publically chastizing those who don't copy what they've been taught. it's a real mind f--k, the equivalent of telling every jounior varsity football player that he's a failure if he doesn't get to play pro. it's not untill your spirit has been broken and you've finally succumbed to the b.s. that happens at ninety percent of all firms that you realize that what you've been chasing has been an illusion. but by that time it's too late.... get out if you've got a chance.
there's nothing wrong with going on your own, but my preference is to work for someone good and get a steady income, and then do my own projects on the side.
realistic and actually telling it like it is? yes.
anyone who says different is trying to sell you something or hasn't been in the profession long enough to realize it. and don't bring up that crap "well you must be working at some crappy firm because if you worked for so-and-so rock-star architect you wouldn't say that". b.s. i've got friends who work for pritzker prize winners (another word for architectural self masturbation) and they pull 80 hour weeks and aren't happy. yes the work conforms to what we're told is good and you can hang your hat on that, but bet your significant other doesn't think that it's worth it. And sure as hell your paycheck isn’t worth it. think about things in perspective and priorities in life – make a decision without the blinders on.
expand your horizon's and put your money where your mouth is. i hate self-righteous people in michigan who blame their careers on the city or the profession. you're accountable for yourself.
you should check out www.world-architects.com post your resume in nyc, san fran, china - wherever. just stop beating the dead horse.
true - you are accountable for yourself. but the city of detroit is culpable as well - it has an inherent knack for shooting itself in the foot (sometimes literally). there's a rut there that is real hard to get out of once things start moving.
